Residing in Moline, Illinois, Michael worked as an archivist in the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He earned a Master of Science in Information degree from the University of Michigan. He began researching his Swedish ancestry about 30 years ago and has traveled to Sweden about a dozen times. Michael was a regular presenter at the annual Moorhead Family History Workshop in Moorhead, MN, from 2010 to 2023, and has been a staff member since 2012 for the annual Swedish American Genealogist Workshop in Salt Lake City, UT.
